Nephropathology and Transplant Pathology

STPA has full-time pathologists with special interest and expertise in nephropathology and transplant pathology. Nephropathology services involve the diagnostic workup of kidney diseases, with biopsies referred to Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital from nearly all civilian hospitals in San Antonio as well as hospitals in Corpus Christi, Amarillo and Lubbock.

Solid organs transplanted at Methodist Specialty & Transplant Hospital include heart, kidney, liver and pancreas. The kidney program is the largest in Texas. The heart transplant program is currently housed at the Methodist Main campus. Transplant pathology is instrumental in determining type and severity of solid organ allograft dysfunction, as the treatment of allograft dysfunction depends on the pathologic interpretation of the biopsied organs.
